nesia
is famous for Batik. Batiking is the process of waxing and dyeing
cotton, rayon or silk. Typically, the cloth is stamped with one
or more waxed "tjap" and
brushed or submerged in dye. Another application is hand waxing
with a pipe-shaped "canthing." Some of the most expensive
silks and some of the least expensive sarongs are waxed by hand.
A crackled effect comes with using a less elastic sort of wax,
then crumpling the fabric and dyeing. Used primarily
for clothing, batik cloth is usually cut to a standard dimension
and is often finished on the edges with a contrasting design and
a signature. There is often a subtle imperfection between duplicated
stampings and the lingering smell of the wax. These are tell-tale
signs of authentic batik-processed cloth. |
