Dance Masks from Java
|
|
|
 |
The masked arts of Indonesia
are thousands of years old, pre-dating East Indian migrations.
Masks represent and are believed to embody the spirits of
royalty and dieties and transmit those energies and personalities
to the wearer. In Bali, masked dancers experience trance states
when they perform, at times loosing consciousness of themselves.
Traditionally, each mask is made unique, its carving, painting
and decorating are never copied exactly from another. In keeping
with that aesthetic, we aquire our pieces from the most reknowned
artists, assuring each as distinct and authentic.
Dance masks are made of light weight woods, and are fitted
with a leather bite pad. Ideally, a mask is custom fitted
to the dancer's head. We have pre-made sizes that can accomodate
many dancers, but we can also have masks specially
ordered. |
